One day during the years of the Second Spanish Republic she made the decision to leave Gran Tarajal, and she never looked back. She was intent on starting a new life for herself and escaping the arranged marriage imposed on her by her own father. Leaving behind the Canary Islands where she had been raised, she focused on finding a way of making a living for herself on the other side of the Atlantic, in Cuba.
